REVIEW: School Library Journal, Aug. 1998
Gr 6 – 8, This humorous look at nouns, hosted by Grammar Ship space pilot “Spike” Spencer and Mission Grammar Specialist Debbie Speller, successfully uses the space mission theme in an across-the-curriculum lesson on nouns. The combination of live-action footage, special effects, readable graphics, and humorous dialogue make this video effective and fun to watch for middle grade students. The comprehensive program discusses concrete, abstract, proper, common, collective, compound, singular, and plural nouns, and how to use apostrophes to show possession. The example sentences onscreen highlight the individual words as they are identified, making it easy for viewers to see and understand the grammar rule. The videos length allows for time during a class period for related hands on activities. The teaching objectives are met, and the technical and audio aspects are good. This production would be an enjoyable way to introduce or review a lesson on nouns. A sound purchase for middle school English curriculums, especially for schools teaching with across the curriculum activities. – Kathy Drummer, Newcastle Middle School
